Reading. Finished: Finding the Mother Tree, Suzanne Simard. Memoir containing a whole lot of first-person perspective on the last fifty years or so of forest ecology; I found her tendency to short sentence fragments hard going but am v glad to have read this, and learned a bunch about how trees connect to & communicate with each other.

Small progress on EYB indexing for Divine, and reading a tiny bit more of the introductory everything of Medlars.

Writing. I am definitely at the point where I am wailing and gnashing my teeth about how to organise the biology/anatomy section, and grimly wishing to have spent, ooh, the last fifteen years practising anatomical illustration.

Watching. More Farscape. Finished the three-parter in season 2. Extremely A Farscape Episodes.

Playing. We finished getting the achievements for Tukoni: Forest Keeper, and have started a replay of Creaks.

Cooking. ... I sort of feel like there wasn't much of note this week. Is that true? Is that fair? Probably not! This evening definitely included making a batch of the self-saucing passion fruit pudding, which is pleasing.

Eating. VIENNESE PATISSERIE. A brought me: Apfelstreuselkuchen; Apfel-Mohn-Torte; Topfenstrudel; and a pair of things that sadly got extremely squidged but were nonetheless tasty, and were once upon a time a Holländer and a Maronikipferl. Also: the British strawberries continue; more of my mother's excellent beans and tomatoes; APPLES.

Exploring. Took the all-roads-and-minimal-canal-paths cycle route to visit The Child on Tuesday, and slightly to my astonishment it worked and was fine! I apparently did enough getting lost that Garmin thought it was a slightly longer journey than the detour via the reservoirs plus More Canal Path, and who am I to argue.

Making & mending. I have Properly Started patch #2 on Test Trousers #1. This is the largest; I still need to decide what I think I'm doing once I've finished blanket-stitching the edges of the largest hole...

Growing. Kohlrabi are coming up! Squash are squashing! Oca are looking much more cheerful for having had significantly more rain! Trinidad Perfume (heatless yellow habanero) is flowering; the next batch of apples I dehydrate are going to also contain a shelf of ancho chillis, about which I am Excited.

Observing. The bat. :)

  1. Yesterday I made the quinoa salad thing for lunch. This meant that for lunch today there was... quinoa salad thing! And I didn't even have to do any work.
  2. Cake (Topfenstrudel) for breakfast; cake (Apfel-Mohn-Torte) for pudding. Thus are the Viennese pastries finished. (A turned out to be a bit sad that I had eaten most of the Apfelstreuselkuchen, so given that I still have the better part of 20kg of apples in bags on the patio, that's one of my baking jobs for tomorrow...)
  3. A looked sufficiently as though they had cleared the upper respiratory grot that we are sleeping in the same bed again. Better. (Cross your fingers for me that I did not make the call they were probably non-infectious again too soon...)
  4. A few days of bracing has calmed the ankle right back down: for today's Stupid Little Walk I wore the hiking boots and stuck the brace in my pocket, and did not wind up feeling the need to stop and put it on. Hurrah for Management Strategies That Work and also Listening To My Body.
  5. Supermarket, not unrelatedly, yielded cut-price British strawberries that on the one hand were still very expensive and on the other are very tasty.
  6. I am hitting the point of having a pretty solid stash of dried poblanos, and the heatless habanero is abruptly COVERED IN FLOWERS again and I am somewhat hopeful that if I bring it inside they might actually usefully fruit...

Code pushed -- FYI

Hi all,

I had to push some code live today to fix something, and that brought with it a couple of new things like if you have two-factor authentication (2FA/MFA) enabled, you got automatically logged out and it is now required to log in. If you don't, you can set it up if you want (you don't have to.)

This also means that if you have 2FA enabled, you will not be able to use 3P clients using your username and password anymore. You should be able to use API keys in most cases, but there's some nuance to that (and tbh, I just am not precisely sure what clients anybody even uses.)

Please do comment if you're seeing anything weird, as per usual, and we'll work on it. Thank you!

That "ugh, but there's so much backstory, I don't want to have to explain it all again to a new therapist" feeling? That feeling. That feeling is a really good indication that going over the backstory again, with a new person as rubber duck, will itself yield new insight.

Will I remember this next time? Probably not! But at least I know it for now.

On Sunday I went up to Cambridge; on Monday I came back down to London, with a little shy of 30kg of apples, triaged into "needs using pretty much immediately" and "probably shelf-stable for at least a few days". This morning and early afternoon, to my own minor astonishment, I actually processed a bunch of the needs-used-immediately(ish), further triaged by urgency, into the dehydrator! Which is continuing to run overnight, and therefore everything smells of warm apple, and I am very pleased about it.

I am not entirely sure where the executive function came from but I'm very relieved it chose to show up, given how much of the last batch of apple harvest I wound up sadly composting.

Reading. For EYB indexing purposes: I have finished Hotel Chocolat: A New Way of Cooking with Chocolate (absolutely do not). I have started Divine: heavenly chocolate recipes with a heart (Linda Collister; not particularly interested in the recipes here either thus far but good GRIEF at least it's actually centering the growers' co-op!!!) and also Medlars: Growing & Cooking (Jane Steward; I had been holding out hope that it would be better than the other book in the series I've indexed, Cherries & Mulberries, but alas while it's differently bad it's still bad: I think I'm at least three loops deep into "we don't have evidence for this so we can't say it happened ... and now I'm going to tell you more about the speculation ... that we have no evidence for ..." and I am definitely getting dizzy about it).

I have also got to the top of the holds queue for Finding the Mother Tree (Suzanne Simard), which [personal profile] recessional pointed me at when I had my rant about The Genius of Trees. I am about three pages in and feeling pretty good about it so far.

I also read the first few pages of Amy Liptrot's The Outrun, after having the third book in her memoir trilogy advertised to me By The Internet, and I think have decided to not read further though I am experiencing mild temptation for reasons I cannot articulate.

Watching. I painted Adam. We watched a Farscape episode. It was very a Farscape episode.

Listening. absolutely earwormed with ein ganzer Sommer.

Creating. Painted A!

Growing. Garlic chives are flowering. :) Squash continue to squash; even I managed to treat the powdery mildew today before going off on a Trains Adventure.

Observing. BAT. Very obligingly came out to swoop around while I was admiring the sunset yesterday!

Prompted by A's adventures elsewhere I took another look at the bezel colours Framework offers for my laptop, to confirm that they still do not inspire me. In this I was correct. (Un?)fortunately, however, I also came across files for printing your own, along with a report from someone who printed the earlier version of the files. Might I be going to get a teal edge to my laptop screen? Maybe! Might A's bezel be changing from OEM orange to sparkly purple? Also maybe!

Cycle ride home from gym (and subsequent dinner, because I could give people money to make the problem of feeding me go away) featured a very dramatic sunset, of which have an amateurish photo (that alas could not cope with showing both the orange-pink end of the spectrum and the section of the sky down to the lower right that was doing the thing of being green):

sunset under a mackerel sky, as seen between two blocks of flats

I thought it was probably still too early in the evening for the bat, but I was wrong! So I followed up gawking at the sunset with gawking at a bat.

I have just bought my first Railcard since the start of the pandemic. It probably won't be live in time to use it for tomorrow's intended travel, but at least next time I decide I want to buy train tickets it will Already Be Sorted.

I have grudgingly succumbed to the lure of "synthetic fibres might survive a little longer than natural when it comes to, you know, cycling" and am now in possession of several second-hand Sturdy By Design lower-limb coverings. I have yet to actually get the selfie of how hilariously well the favourite shorts coordinate with the gym decor, which I had not clocked at all until I showed up wearing them; today was the leggings' first outing; I am recording this in no small part to make it easier to work out whether they are actually more robust to Indignities. I am enjoying being All The Rainbows All The Time, helped along by the part where I'm not actually willing to subject that fabric to my bike keys, so they now live on my Pride lanyard for gym-going purposes...

  1. I have FINISHED indexing (in the EatYourBooks sense) a cookbook I was threatening to stall on.
  2. Indexing sure is getting me to actually properly read a lot of cookbooks about which I had vague curiosity! I am glad to be doing the reading and also, perversely, glad to discover that the majority of them are of limited interest to me for any purpose other than reading approximately once. (Alas that indexing takes reading at least twice...)
  3. The magic that is international video calls.
  4. A few weeks ago I bought some freeze-dried raspberry powder to see what I thought of adding it to protein shakes; I'm indifferent to that but really enjoying having a tablespoon or so of the stuff in my breakfast mush.
  5. Sourdough bread and its willingness to just keep on being food long after it was baked and without any especial care being taken of it.

This morning I accompanied A to St Pancras to wave them off to NixCon, via getting brunch just over from the Eurostar, and paused for my own purposes at buns from home in KGX to get myself treats.

Unfortunately, this evening I went "... it really has been a while since my last dose of the anti-CGRP migraine preventative, hasn't it", checked the calendar, and realised it was due last Tuesday. ( Read more... )
